After nearly two weeks in captivity, a midwife was released Tuesday by suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sulu, a regional military spokesperson said Wednesday.
Capt. Maria Rowena Muyuela of the Armed Forces Western Mindanao Command identified the freed victim as Lailani Bernabe, who was seized on Aug. 28 in Barangay Linbug in Panglima Estino town while on her way to work.
Bernabe was freed 6 a.m. Tuesday in Barangay Danag, Muyuela said.
Authorities have pointed to the group of Abu Sayyaf sub-commander Arod Wahing as the one responsible for the abduction.
The Westmincom spokesperson said provincial board member Ismun Suhuri helped in the release of Bernabe.
Asked whether any ransom was paid for Bernabe's release, Muyuela said there is no confirmation obtained from ground units.
At present, the bandit group is still holding captive photographers Dutchman Elwold Horn and Swiss Lorenzo Vinciguerra. Both were seized in Tawi-tawi in February 2012.
Authorities have blamed the Abu Sayyaf for past bombing and kidnapping activities in Mindanao.
