Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian says his government is deliberating whether France should extend its military intervention against Islamic State

France is considering extending its air strikes against Islamic State (Isil) extremists into Syria in the wake of the beheading of a French citizen by Isil-linked militants in Algeria.
France last week joined the US-led assault on the extremists who have seized control of much of Syria and Iraq but, while American planes have bombarded Isil positions in both countries, French attacks have so far been limited to Iraq.
Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Thursday his government was deliberating whether France should extend its intervention to Syria.
"We already have an important task in Iraq and we will see how the situation evolves in coming days," Mr Le Drian told RTL radio. "We are asking the question."
Paris has six Rafale fighter jets and just under 1,000 soldiers based in the United Arab Emirates.
