After every Gilas Pilipinas loss, San Mig Super Coffee head coach Tim Cone’s name is inevitably mentioned in conversations.
“Dapat si Tim Cone na lang ang coach,” people would quip using their different social media accounts. Because he is the most successful coach in PBA history and because he just won his second PBA Grand Slam, some people felt that he could do a better job compared to Reyes.
Currently in South Korea for a series of tune-up game for the Mixers, Cone once and for all ended that talk by saying Chot Reyes is the perfect man for Gilas.
"I just want to say from the heart, I truly believe in [Chot] and the program. He's the right guy and the program will bring us to next level," Cone said through his Twitter account.
Cone was more vocal about his support for Gilas in the past few days.
“Playing all-Filipino and almost beating Korea at their home-court was really, really tough. I know the pressures of coaching the Asian Games,” the former Philippine team head coach said.
“We all really wanted to go to the game today and support Gilas, but tickets and transport were a problem,” Cone added. “Hopefully, they make [the] semis and we get to see them in the semis. We want to support to the end our brother Ping and the rest of the Gilas family.”
However, it wasn’t meant to be. Gilas did not beat Kazakhstan by a big enough margin and Marc Pingris wasn’t able to play because of an injured leg.
After the loss to Kazakhstan, Reyes admitted that there could be changes in Gilas and that even his spot isn’t secure. However, Cone’s words should help the case for Reyes’ retention.
P.S.: Should he be replaced?
