MANILA - A man with a lotto ticket burned by flat iron may need to wait for a year before claiming a P12-million lottery prize, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) said.
PCSO General Manager Jose Ferdinand Rojas II told dzMM Monday that someone else with an undamaged and genuine ticket may surface and claim the prize.
"Baka mamaya, hindi natin masabi, may dumating na real ticket owner. Hindi ko sinasabing hindi siya ang real ticket owner. Maaring may lumabas na siya ang nanalo. Dapat hintayin din natin," Rojas said. "May one year to claim ang mga nanalo."

He said the case will be raised to the PCSO board of directors.
Antonio Failon Mendoza of Calaca, Batangas claimed that he won P12 million in the October 2 draw.
However, his daughter allegedly used a flat iron on the crumpled ticket.
A big part of the ticket got burned, making it useless and impossible to read by the PCSO's machine.
Rojas said all is not lost for Mendoza.
"Hindi natin isasara ang pintuan. Ito'y dapat suriin nating mabuti," he said, adding that the case is the first of its kind in the country.
"Tignan natin kung ano ang pwede nating gawin," he added.
Rojas stressed that PCSO policy is that tickets must be in good condition to be validated.
"Hindi ko alam kung talagang kaya ng mga forensic experts," Rojas said. "Kinukuha muna namin lahat ng data para magpatibay or magpahina sa kaso ng claimant."
The PCSO follows specific guidelines in claiming prizes, which includes a "no ticket, no payment" policy. The ticket should also be readable.
Roxas said they imposed stricter guidelines to discourage fake claimants from trooping to their office.
The outlet where Mendoza bought the ticket confirmed that a certain ticket with the winning combination was bought from them.
