MANILA, Philippines - At least 15 government officials, including Health Secretary Enrique Ona and Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, have been invited to a Senate hearing on the Philippines’ preparedness in dealing with the spread of the Ebola virus.
Senator Teofisto "TG" Guingona III, head of the Senate Committee on Health, on Monday said he will conduct the hearings “not to sow panic, but rather to gather everyone involved and ensure that all concerned government agencies are synchronized in their efforts and are prepared in dealing with this disease."
"This is a multi-faceted issue, and we should be able to work together as a cohesive unit in order for us to effectively control this pandemic,” he added.
The investigation is in relation to the Senate Proposed Resolutions 831 and 851 filed separately by Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago last August.
Data from the Department of Foreign Affairs say that there are nearly 3,500 Filipino workers in West African countries that are hardest hit by Ebola. Recent outbreak of Ebola has killed more than 4,000 people in 2014.
The Senate hearings will be conducted initially on October 22, 2014. Other resource persons are the following:
