MANILA -- Secretary Panfilo Lacson will no longer oversee the rehabilitation of victims of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) by February 2015, the Cabinet official said Sunday.
Speaking to radio dzBB, Lacson said he has submitted his resignation letter to President Benigno Aquino III and it will take effect on February 10, 2015.
Lacson joined the Aquino administration a month after Yolanda, the world's strongest storm on record, barreled through Visayas in November last year and left more than 6,000 people dead and P571-billion damage to property.
He was appointed as head of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery (OPARR), a temporary position tasked to coordinate government efforts in bringing disaster-hit areas back on their feet.
A year into the job, Lacson said he already achieved his purpose. He said it would be better for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), a permanent body, to take over the rehabilitation works.
Lacson hopes that the President would see the wisdom of his proposal to transfer the duties of the OPARR to the NDRRMC.
"I shouldn't be there all the time. I must slowly fade away from the scene," the former senator said
