TULUNAN, Cotabato - The local government unit (LGU) of Tulunan is
preparing for a hero’s welcome for Mary Jean "MJ" Lastimosa even if she
failed to be among the Top 5 finalists during the 63rd Miss Universe
pageant held in Miami, Florida on Monday (PHL time).
Mayor Lani Candolada said she is still proud of Lastimosa being a
daughter of Tulunan since her joining the pageant gave the town an
opportunity to be known throughout the country and even the whole world.
“We will give her a hero’s welcome if she opts to go home in Tulunan.
Though she didn’t make it and win the crown, still she is our very own,
one and only Miss Universe,” Mayor Candolada said.
Candolada said winning is just secondary and what is important is
Lastimosa represented the Philippines well in the prestigious
competition.
Lastimosa was born in Barangay Sibsib in Tulunan. However her family migrated to Davao City when she was in grade school.
“Inasmuch as we wanted MJ to bring home the crown, still there was the
panel of judges that really worked hard to choose the next Miss
Universe,” Candolada added.
Candolada is optimistic that despite the loss, Lastimosa can do more and aim high in future beauty pageants.
“You’re still young, MJ. Just continue to dream until such time that you achieve your goal in life,” Candolada said.
Meantime, Candolada was disgusted since the people of Tulunan were not
given a chance to see in full the live telecast of the Miss Universe
beauty pageant.

The town of Tulunan itself experienced at least three power
fluctuations to the dismay of constituents who trooped to the town hall
building to see the live telecast of the pageant.
The power returned shortly before 12 noon, when it was already the announcement of the winners.
