Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen announced Monday that he is donating another $6.6 million to help stem the spread of Ebola in West Africa.
A $3.6 million grant will be used to distribute 50,000 protection kits in Liberia. The kits, which will be airlifted by UPS, are designed to protect healthy people from contracting the virus from infected family members. People who get the kits will also be trained in how to use the gear, dispose of waste and reduce the risk of infection.
Another $3 million will go to establish an air bridge to deliver medical supplies, protective gear and drugs for the next three months. Some airlines have stopped flights into some of the affected countries, which has made it more difficult to transport badly needed equipment.
Under a partnership with the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, the disaster and humanitarian response organization Airlink will make the regular deliveries.
The new donations bring the total Allen has committed to the outbreak to more than $20 million, including $9 million to establish emergency operations centers in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, and $2.8 million to the American Red Cross.
