Thai army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha, shown in May, has apologized for the comments he made about beautiful, bikini-wearing tourists following the slaughter of two Britons.
A Thai
general backed off his tone deaf warning to beautiful, bikini-clad tourists.
Speaking
after the slaughter of two sunbathing Britons, Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha claimed
foreigners put themselves in danger with their revealing swimwear.
“This
has always been a problem.... they think our country is beautiful and safe and
they can do whatever they want, wear bikinis wherever they like,” Chan-ocha
said after the gruesome attack.
He went
on to suggest only ugly women could wear a two piece without fear.
British tourists Hannah Witheridge and David Miller were brutally killed on the Thai Island of Koh Tao.
“I’m
asking if they wear bikinis in Thailand, will they be safe? Only if they are
not beautiful,” he said.
British
tourists Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, were bludgeoned to death
and left on the resort island of Koh Tao on Monday.
Their
bodies were discovered on Monday in a rocky alcove next to a bloody hoe, Thai
officials said.
The
general’s comments after their deaths sparked international backlash as critics
blasted him as a chauvinist and victim blamer.
Chan-ocha,
the island nation’s military ruler, now says he’s sorry for his choice of
words.
“I
apologize that I have spoken too harshly ... I didn’t mean to criticize or look
down on anyone,” he said. “Today I can guarantee that Thailand is still safe
... I wanted to warn (the tourists) to be careful.”
