Kobe Paras is taking his talents to the university that produced the likes of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Reggie Miller, Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook.
The California-based Paras has committed to attend the famed University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for college after gaining prominence for his play at Los Angeles Cathedral.
Paras made his decision to join the Bruins yesterday after the 6-foot-6 son of PBA legend Benjie Paras received scholarship offers from various universities.
The former La Salle Greenhills standout was recruited by UCLA coach Steve Alford, who played for Bobby Knight at Indiana University during the 1980’s and has been coaching UCLA for two seasons.
“I am thankful that Coach Steve Alford is willing to take a chance on me,” Paras said in a statement posted on the Los Angeles Times.
“I am very appreciative to all the coaches that made offers to me for their interest. While all of this is new to me, I realize that I can only go to one college so I felt it was not necessary to continue the recruitment process with so many very good schools and coaches already at the table. I see no need to seek out more offers.”
The 17-year-old earned attention last year when he dunked on LeBron James during a basketball clinic hosted by the NBA star in Manila.
But it was during last year’s FIBA U-17 3×3 World Championship where Paras shone even brighter after winning the side-event Slam Dunk Contest in Jakarta.
