FOOD CONGRESS
Cagayan De Oro City – The Mindanao Food Congress (FoodCon) will be conducted by the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (OroChamber) on September 25 and 26 at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel here. Oro Chamber President Efren Uy said the FoodCon is the perfect setting for showcasing Mindanao’s agricultural products. It is a venue to find new markets, establish industry networks, and discover new technologies to become more competitive. Complementing the FoodCon is the “OroBEST Expo 2014” set from September 25 to 27, 2014, at the Atrium of the Limketkai Center here. (Camcer Ordoñez Imam)
HABAL-HABAL REGULATION
Cagayan De Oro City – A bill that regulates the operation of habal-habal – a modified means of transportation in hinterlands of the Visayas and Mindanao using a modified motorcycle – was filed by a lawmaker. Miamis Oriental Second District Representative Juliette T. Uy said House Bill 4794 seeks to grant the local government units (LGUs) the authority to regulate and control the use of the habal-habal in their respective jurisdictions. Its purpose is to legalize habal-habal as means of transportation to be used by the local people in the remote areas where trucks, jeepneys, and tricycles cannot operate. (Camcer Ordoñez Imam)
VOLUNTEER GROUP
Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat – A fire volunteer group that will help not only during fire incidents but also in disaster response and mitigation was organized by the local government here. City Mayor Lina Montilla has sworn in 50 fire volunteers led by Allan Marvin Acosta who will augment the personnel of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. The group is composed of policemen, teachers, local government employees, personnel of the Tacurong Search and Rescue and Joint Task Force Talakudong. They underwent a five-day training that includes lectures and practical examinations on fire suppression and control, and basic rescue and emergency medical operations. (Joseph Jubelag)
HIV MONITORING
Butuan City – At least 123 persons living with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) was recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) as of July, 2014. “This translates to an average of three to four new infections every month,” said the Region-13 office of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG-13), quoting reports from the DOH. With this, the DILG-13 urged local government units to help stop the proliferation of the dreaded HIV and Aids (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) in the various areas in the Caraga Region. “The proliferation of HIV and Aids will have direct impact on poverty, social services delivery, and public safety,” DILG-13 Director Lilibeth A. EXPANSION PROJECT
Kidapawan City– Some 23 water expansion projects were completed as of September, this year, by the Metro Kidapawan Water District (MKWD). MKWD General Manager Stella Gonzales said the 17 projects include the distribution line expansion in four of its service areas in the province with a total length of 15,842 meters, four rehabilitation projects, and two major transmission lines connected to the recently developed spring source in a village, here. Funds for the projects were sourced from the P250 million loan granted to them in 2010 by the Local Water Utilities Administration, she said. With the expansion, the MKWD has offered free application fee privilege to at least 205 new connections.
